The initiative draws deep inspiration from the school’s Jesuit roots, specifically following the teachings of Saint Ignatius of Loyola, who urged individuals to seek a positive interpretation of their neighbor’s words rather than rushing to condemnation. These guidelines are physically present on every table, reminding participants that disagreement does not require hostility. For student facilitators like Julia Kane, a political science major, these dinners provided a necessary bridge during moments of intense tension on campus, such as those following October 7th last year.

Recent sessions have focused on themes like the responsibilities of democracy and civic participation, bringing together freshmen and seniors from diverse geographic backgrounds. In these intimate settings, students find themselves admitting feelings of defeat regarding traditional protests or frustration with how complex hearings are reduced to thirty second clips on TikTok. By fostering this level of vulnerability and honesty, Holy Cross is treating the dinner table not as a place to avoid politics, but as the primary site for learning how to navigate them with humility and respect.
