Bob Pettit: NBA’s first MVP recipient and 11-time All-Star dies aged 93

September 25, 2026 2 min read

The basketball world is mourning the loss of Bob Pettit, a pioneering force who helped shape the modern era of the NBA. The Basketball Hall of Fame confirmed that the legendary figure passed away at the age of 93. Described by the Hall of Fame as a true giant of the game, Pettit left behind a legacy rooted in excellence and consistency, having served as one of the league’s earliest superstars during its formative years.

Pettit etched his name into history as the very first player to receive the NBA Most Valuable Player award in the 1955-56 season, a feat he would repeat three years later while leading the league in scoring. Throughout his eleven seasons in professional basketball, he earned an All-Star selection every single year and became the first person to surpass the milestone of 20,000 career points. His dominance on both ends of the floor was reflected in his staggering career averages of 26.4 points and 16.2 rebounds per game.

His journey began at Louisiana State University, where he excelled before being drafted by the Milwaukee Hawks in 1954. As the franchise transitioned to St Louis, Pettit remained loyal to the organization for his entire playing career. Together they climbed to the pinnacle of the sport in 1958, defeating the Boston Celtics to claim an NBA championship. Though he reached two additional finals in 1960 and 1961, those victories cemented his status as one of the premier players of his generation long before his retirement in 1965.

Beyond his professional accolades, Pettit held a special place in collegiate history as the first athlete at LSU to have their jersey retired. In a heartfelt tribute posted on their website, LSU noted that Pettit essentially defined what it meant to be a modern power forward and established benchmarks that remain difficult for today’s professionals to replicate. While no specific cause of death was provided, his influence continues through his induction into the Hall of Fame back in 1971 and his lasting impact on how basketball is played today.
