UK believes Iran involved in RAF Fairford incident, Burnham says

October 1, 2026 2 min read

Prime Minister Andy Burnham has stated that the British government believes Iran played a role in a security incident at RAF Fairford over the weekend. Speaking to the BBC, the Prime Minister noted there are strong indications of Iranian involvement, though he declined to provide specific evidence while emphasizing that a complex police investigation is still underway. The announcement follows the arrest of five UK nationals, aged 23 to 25, who were detained after police spotted three suspicious vehicles in Whelford, a village located just east of the airbase. While officers discovered quantities of petrol during searches of the vans, no explosive devices were recovered.

The situation has sparked diplomatic friction and public scrutiny, particularly regarding the decision to release the suspects on bail. President Donald Trump expressed surprise at the move during a appearance at the White House, suggesting he would never have allowed such leniency. In response, Burnham defended the legal process, insisting that the men are subject to the strictest possible bail conditions and assuring the public that security authorities have the situation under total control. He maintained full confidence in how British intelligence services are managing the case and confirmed that officials have been in constant communication with their American counterparts throughout the week.

Tensions surrounding RAF Fairford have remained high given its strategic importance as a forward operating location for the US Air Force. Recently, US bombers have departed from the base for missions in the Middle East following UK approval for defensive strikes against Iran. This operational use prompted Tehran to previously warn that any base used for aggression against its territory would be considered a legitimate target. However, despite these warnings and current suspicions, the Iranian embassy in London has categorically rejected any links to this specific event, condemning what it describes as unfounded and malicious speculation.
